"WHEN YOU CAN'T
... YOU CAN ...!"
Written and Preached by David P. Nolte
MATTHEW 11:1-6
As Todd Huston was untangling the ski ropes to prepare for inner-tubing,
the outboard motor kicked into reverse and sucked his legs into the prop.
His dad pulled him out of the water and into the boat and sped to shore
to get help. Examination disclosed that the sciatic nerve had been severed
and his right leg would be paralyzed from the knee to the toes. The doctors
said there was even a good chance he'd never walk again. Todd was bewildered.
He cried, "Why me? Why me?" Bone disease set into his right foot
and for the next 7 years he battled to keep his leg, but he finally had
to face the inevitable amputation. A Bible verse came to him, "righteousness
goes before him and prepares the way for his steps." Psalms
85:13. Todd couldn't see any good in his predicament. He couldn't
see the way prepared for him, but he learned to listen to God's word and
promise. John the Baptist was in a spot where his spiritual eyesight
failed him. "Why me?" might have found its way from his heart
to his lips. His once clear vision of Jesus Christ was clouded. Sometimes
that's the way it is for us, too, but when you can't do one thing, you
can do another.
- WHEN YOU CAN'T SEE, YOU CAN LISTEN!
- John had lost his former insight. His sureness, his confidence, his
clear vision of Christ was dimmed.
- Formerly he had recognized Jesus as the messiah:
- Mark 1:7-8 "and he was preaching, and saying, 'After
me one is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to stoop down
and untie the thong of His sandals. I baptized you with water; but He will
baptize you with the Holy Spirit.'"
- John 3:30 "He must increase, but I must decrease."
- Now he had his doubts: "Are you the expected one, or shall we
look for someone else?" Matthew 11:3.
- Why did he lose his sight? What blinded him? What eclipsed the messiahship
of Jesus in his eyes? What contributed to his spiritual myopia?
- Depression:
- Discouragement:
- Disillusionment:
- Disappointment:
- Jesus didn't rebuke him. He sent John's disciples to say, "the
blind receive sight and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed and the
deaf hear, and the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached
to them. And blessed is he who keeps from stumbling over me. ...."
Matthew 11:5-6. The implication is: "John, I know you
can't see clearly right now, but just listen to me!"
- The Bible speaks to us in such times of blindness and we need ears
to hear what God says;
- When we are blinded by fear: Isaiah 35:4 "Say to
those with anxious heart, 'take courage, fear not. Behold, your God will
come with vengeance; the recompense of God will come, but He will save
you.'"
- When we are blinded by upheaval: "Cease striving and know that
I am God;" Psalms 46:10.
- When we are blinded by guilt: 1 John 1:9 "If we
confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and
to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."
- When we are blinded by loneliness: Hebrews 13:5 "He
himself has said, 'I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you,'"
- When we can't see, just listen to Him saying: "i love you! I accept
you! I forgive you! I am with you! I will help you!"
Todd was blinded by grief and he couldn't see why he had been allowed
to go through all his pain, but he listened to God's word. In april, 1981,
he knew that he had to go through with the amputation and when he settled
that in his mind, he found courage to face the unavoidable. He didn't know
what God had in store for him, but he believed that God held him in his
hand. His leg was gone, but not his faith. He studied psychology
and graduated magna cum laude and took a job as director of the
amputee resource center in california. He became a great inspiration to
others who had suffered the loss of a limb. He said, "the steps I
must take in my life are ordered. I guess I'm on the right path, but what
is my next step?" He didn't know his next step, but he believed God.
That's what John the Baptist needed to do as he questioned, "are
you the expected one?" He didn't know right then, but he needed to
believe.
- WHEN YOU CAN'T KNOW, YOU CAN BELIEVE!
- John needed to hold to his former persuasion, his first conviction
about Jesus.
- Belief was then, always has been, is now, and always will be crucial
to our relationship to God.
- To the man whose daughter had just died, Jesus said, "Do not be
afraid any longer, only believe" Mark 5:36.
- And Jesus said to the father of the demon possessed boy, "All
things are possible to him who believes" Mark 9:23.
- Mark 16:16 "He who has believed and has been baptized
shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned."
- John 6:28-29 "They said therefore to him, 'What
shall we do, that we may work the works of God?' Jesus answered and said
to them, 'This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has
sent.'"
- We see so little, therefore we must listen to what He says; we know
in part, therefore we must believe.
- Hebrews 11:1, 2, 6 "Now faith is the assurance of things
hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the men of
old gained approval. ... and without faith it is impossible to please Him,
for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder
of those who seek Him."
Todd believed in God and that he would help him. Before the accident,
todd had hiked and camped and been an athlete. Now, with a prosthesis he
could walk but not much more. A new device was invented called flex-foot
which enabled him to be more mobile and with determination and effort,
he was soon able to run 12 miles per day, but that wasn't enough. He heard
about an expedition seeking for an amputee to climb the highest mountain
in all 50 states in 100 days or less! Todd wanted to be that amputee and
he trusted God to help him accomplish what no other amputee had accomplished.
He prayed about it and became convinced that this was to be his next step.
He applied to participate in the expedition. After he was accepted and
had made all preparations, the expedition was cancelled for lack of funds!
Todd didn't understand because he had been convinced that God was leading
him to do this, but he trusted God for the finances and soon had enough
backing on his own. Incredibly, state by state, mountain by mountain, in
66 days, 21 hours and 37 minutes todd had succeeded in shattering the old
record by 35 days! He had trusted God when he just didn't understand, and
he had conquered. John the baptist, too, needed to trust even when
he didn't understand. We are often in that same position.
- WHEN YOU CAN'T UNDERSTAND, YOU CAN TRUST!
- John was clearly puzzled. He was baffled by the turn of events that
had him in prison. He had heard of the works of Jesus and perhaps wondered,
if indeed Jesus was Messiah,
- Why He didn't press His claims more powerfully and assert His Lordship
more definitely.
- Why He didn't use His power to free him from prison.
- Do you ever get puzzled and lack understanding? Do you ever wonder
- Why the wicked prosper and the righteous suffer? Read Psalm 73!
After lamenting that seeming injustice, the Psalmist concluded: "For,
behold, those who are far from Thee will perish; Thou hast destroyed all
those who are unfaithful to Thee. But as for me, the nearness of God is
my good; I have made the lord God my refuge, that I may tell of all Thy
works" Psalms 73:27-28. When you can't understand, you
can trust.
- Why God's dealing with the wicked seems so long in coming? Read 2
Peter 3:9 "The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some
count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish
but for all to come to repentance." When you can't understand, you
can trust.
- Why God's help seems delayed? David wondered it: "How long, o
Lord? Wilt Thou forget me forever? How long wilt Thou hide thy face from
me?" and he concluded after meditation, "But I have trusted in
Thy lovingkindness; my heart shall rejoice in Thy salvation." Psalms
13:1, 5. When you can't understand, you can trust.
- Why you must suffer so much when you try to serve Him faithfully? Read
2 Corinthians 4:17 "for momentary, light affliction
is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison,
..." when you can't understand, you can trust.
- We all see and know some things that boggle us. We often live in the
world of inverted logic and we grow confused. In such times trust is a
must!
- "I cannot understand the why's and wherefore's of a thousand things,
the burdens, the annoyances, the daily stings. I cannot understand,
but I can trust, for perfect trusting, perfect comfort brings."
Todd Huston's testimony is this, "through faith in God and a belief
in the abilities God gives you, you can overcome whatever challenges you
face in life!" People are prone to believe and trust the strangest
things. We can read in enquirer or some other piece of pulp, "Mom
to be on diet of only chicken, lays huge egg!" or "WWII bomber
found on the moon!" or "Woman gives birth to 2 year old baby:
child walks and talks in 3 days!" People will read and believe this
nonsense, but refuse to take God's revealed and inspired word seriously!
No wonder people lose spiritual sight and are confused! But God has spoken
to us! We need to trust Him! We need to put faith in Him! When you've run
the course of your endurance, His full giving just begins. When you've
become weary, you can roll onto Him the load that has crushed you and he
can bear it. When you've done what you can, God will do what you can't!
And when you can't face life, you can faith
it! When you do, you'll find that faith is the victory! Faith is
the victory! Faith is the victory! Faith is the victory!
